The Ybl Miklós Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering of Obuda University organised its international conference for the third time this year. The main theme of the 3rd Ybl Conference on the Built Environment, held on 16 May 2025, was the Sustainable Built Environment, which was the subject of about 130 presentations in 20 thematic sessions and a poster exhibition accompanying the conference.
At the opening of the scientific session, which was held in English and Hungarian, Dr. Zsuzsanna Fáczányi, Vice Dean for Research, welcomed the audience and the distinguished guests, Lóránt Perényi, Deputy State Secretary for Architectural Strategy (Ministry for Construction and Transport), Dr. Viktória Sugár, Vice Rector for Sustainability and Priority Developments, and András Csiszér, Director of Zoboki Design & Architecture, the plenary session's speaker.
Dr. Viktória Sugár welcomed the participants of this year's conference on behalf of the Rector of the University, Prof. Dr. Levente Kovács and his management, and expressed his gratitude that our University, as a Times Higher Education 601-800 ranked institution, places both academic excellence and social engagement as a top priority. Scientific events like this one, which attract wide international interest, are important for this success and for Obuda University to be able to demonstrate similar achievements in the future.
In his opening speech, Lóránt Perényi emphasized the power of community, the importance of common thinking and knowledge sharing for a more hopeful future. If the determination and perseverance of one man – referring to the sporting achievements of Gábor Rakonczay – can enable him to cross the Atlantic Ocean alone, then with a joint effort, engineering knowledge has many times more potential for sustainable environmental management, and with it the protection of our land, air and water.
The plenary session was held by András Csiszér, design director of Zoboki Design & Architecture, who, starting from the changing role of the architect, the expectations and challenges that professionals nowadays face, presented the office's high-tech concepts from a practical point of view, yet consciously building on the human-nature and human-human relations.
This year's event, which attracted over 300 participants, again presented a diverse range of topics on the international engineering scene, including practical approaches, industry players, faculties, students and researchers from Obuda University, as well as recent theoretical research by students of the Doctoral School of Architecture, Design and Technology, which was launched in autumn 2024. In addition to national architectural and civil engineering courses, representatives from a number of foreign universities, organisations and companies participated in the various sessions: the Austrian Institute of Technology, the Universities of Auckland and Cracow, researchers from the Faculty of Applied Arts in Belgrade, and speakers from universities in Campania, Silesia and Transylvania.
The National Research, Development and Innovation Office, the National Committee of ICOMOS and the media partners Hungarian Architecture, Magyar Építőipar and Országépítő magazines played a key role in the successful implementation of the programme - our Faculty expresses its gratitude and appreciation for their support.
