Research workshop on the experience of the 3rd Ybl Conference on the Built Environment
Ybl Conference on the Built Environment

On 17 September, an open, scientific and educational presentation of the 3rd Ybl Conference on the Built Environment was held in the framework of the first research workshop of the Doctoral School of Architecture, Design, and Technology.

The aim of the organisers was to share the experiences of one of the most successful scientific events of this year with the audience, particularly the newly enrolled first grade doctoral school students. It took place in building C of the Ybl Miklós Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering, where Prof. Dr. Anthony John Gall, Dean of the Faculty, gave the opening speech at 15:00.

He was followed by Dr. habil. Viktória Sugár, Vice Rector for Sustainability and Priority Developments at Obuda University, one of the conference's visionaries and organisers, who reviewed the history of the Ybl Conference, how it has evolved from a series of scientific sessions presenting the Faculty's academic work to a prestigious international event.

She emphasised that the key to the dynamic development of the conference is the growing number of sponsors, especially the National Research, Development and Innovation Office, the National Committee of ICOMOS, the Hungarian Architecture, Magyar Építőipar and Országépítő magazines, whose support was crucial in organising the conference on such a large scale with so many speakers and infrastructural background.

She also recalled the themes of the previous conferences: the first event was entitled "The Potential of Challenge, Value in Change", while the second - "Ybl210: Building Bridges, Crafting Communities: together in Architecture" - was a special edition, as it coincided with the 210th anniversary of the birth of Miklós Ybl.

The Vice Rector also pointed out that the conference's ever-evolving website, the growing number of sponsors and the ever-increasing audience all reflect the success of the event and its significant challenges. An important achievement, she said, is that the conference proceedings are published each year in the internationally renowned, peer-reviewed Ybl Journal of Built Environment, which provides an excellent publication opportunity for students and faculty members alike. She added that the next conference, scheduled for May 2026, is already in the planning stage, with a theme still to be chosen.

In the second half of the event, the audience was presented eight short lectures in English or Hungarian by doctoral students from the faculty. Most of these had been presented at the conference in May, but now in a fine-tuned, more thoughtful version - generating new reflections and questions.

- Marcell Nánási: Potential of Passive Ventilation Systems in the Urban Spaces of Budapest
- Balázs István Vass: Fenntatható mű-emlék-védelem
- Balázs Váradi: Alternative Research Approaches to Rural Landscape Rehabilitation
- Emese Katinka Juhász: Urban Public Spaces and Livability - A Comparison of Key Spaces in Budapest, Copenhagen, and Seoul
- Anett Mizsei: Sustainability-driven Idea - Ecological Aspects of Conceptual Architecture
- Zsuzsanna Nádasi-Antal: Bögrés szemeskályha kialakulása és utóélete
- Gábor Erhardt: A hagyományos szépségfogalom, mint fenntarthatósági kritérium az építészetben
- Enikő Boros: Interior Space and Experience - Investigations of Adolf Loos' Villa Müller

The topics of the presentations were highly diverse, providing an excellent insight for the newly admitted students of the doctoral school on how to imagine a lively conference situation, providing a platform for international research collaborations, where not only the tight time frame but also the ever-changing audience and the questions raised are challenging.

The project MEC_SZ 149911 was implemented with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Innovation, National Fund for Research Development and Innovation, under the MEC_24 grant scheme.
