The Dean of our Faculty designed and opened the exhibition Kós 140 – Károly Kós's Workshop at the Székely National Museum in Sfântu Gheorghe. Prof. Dr. Anthony John Gall PhD, Ybl Prize-winning architect, delivered the opening speech as curator of the exhibition along with Mihály Vargha, Director of the Székely National Museum, Sándor Tamás, President of the Covasna County Council, Attila Turi, President of the Hungarian Academy of Arts and István Kenyeres, Director General of the Budapest City Archives.
The architect, who has studied the life of Károly Kós, praised Kós's spirit and work, and remarked that he was particularly pleased that the museum had paid such attention to the exhibition, which brings together original plans of the architect, as well as archival photographs, contemporary illustrations and documents, to give an insight into his workshop.
It was also mentioned at the ceremony that Sfântu Gheorghe is a special location, as it was where most of Kós's designs were built after Budapest. In addition to the Székely National Museum, the town is also home to the architect's grand designs that are still its gemstone and part of its living culture, such as the former Reformed Girls' High School (now part of the Székely Mikó College), the former Reformed Elementary School (now a students' house), the Keresztes House, where Béla Bartók lived in March 1927, and the Csulak House (now a family house).
The installations designed by Anthony Gall and realized thanks to the drawing and graphic work of Valéria Szabó and Arnold Hornperger, the building reconstructions by András Horkai and his students, the furniture made by the YBL NTDK staff, the source materials borrowed from the Ybl Library collection and the technical assistance provided by NIK contributed significantly to the success of the exhibition. In a way, it was a "homecoming" to the homeland of Károly Kós, who was of Saxon origin and "Székely" to the core.
Attila Turi, Kossuth and Ybl Prize-winning architect, pointed out that the exhibition on the occasion of the 140th anniversary of Károly Kós' birth focuses on the triple unity of faith, struggle and persevering work.
The event was moderated by Boglárka Prezsmer, head of the drama department of the Plugor Sándor Art Lyceum, and Anett Deák, a senior student of the Plugor Sándor Art Lyceum, also participated.
The exhibition is based on the exhibition of the same title held in 2024 at the Kunsthalle in Budapest, which has now been organised in Sfântu Gheorghe with the collaboration of historian András Tóth-Bartos.
