The book "Historical Tenements of Pest: Styles, Patterns, Evolution" was presented at a full-house event at the Hungarian Architects' House on 24 September – as an accompanying event to the Faculty's Msc 2024 complex design exhibition.
Dr. habil. Viktória Sugár, Vice-Rector for Sustainability and Strategic Developments at Obuda University, and Michihiro Kita, researcher at Osaka University, presented the book at the Hungarian Pavilion of the Osaka World Expo. However, the national premiere has only just taken place.
The moderator of the evening, Dr. Viktor Rozmann, spoke to Viktoria Sugár, one of the authors of the book, about her personal relationship with Japan, the one and a half decade long relationship between Osaka University and the Ybl Miklós Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering, and the more than 15 years of joint research history of the book, which was also the subject of her doctoral dissertation, which will be defended in Osaka in 2020.
The author also said that the apartment buildings, built largely around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, not only served as homes for people moving to the centre of Budapest, but also as a record of the city's development: they reflect both the architectural ideals and social conditions of the period. Accordingly, the book presents the tenement houses of Pest from three perspectives: their historical impact on the development of the city, a detailed analysis of their architectural elements, and their stylistic classification. In addition, it provides a comprehensive overview of the architectural and historical significance, characteristics and conservation values of tenement houses. At the same time, it can be used as a handbook and textbook for architects, decision-makers, investors and all those who are deeply interested in or responsible for the preservation of Budapest's distinctive built heritage.
The personal discussion also revealed that they would definitely like to see a sequel to the book, as the research has produced a lot of material that has not yet been published.
