Bernády György. Social Networks

Exhibition opened in Târgu Mureș with the participation of our faculty

The History Department of the Mureș County Museum has opened the exhibition Bernády György. Social Networks was organized by the History Department of the Mureș County Museum and opened on Friday, July 12, 2024, at the Palace of Culture in Târgu Mureș. The exhibition presents the career and impressive achievements of Mayor György Bernády.

On March 9, 2023, Anthony Gall, Dean of the Ybl Miklós Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering at Obuda University, and Koppány Bulcsú Ötvös, Director of the Mureș County Museum, signed a cooperation agreement on behalf of the university. which led to the creation of the digital architectural models for the exhibition now open at the Palace of Culture in Târgu Mureș. The reconstruction of the Bernády exhibition was made possible with the support of the Hungarian Genius Program of the National Cultural Fund, with Dr. János Orbán, scientific researcher, as chief curator. Dr. András Horkai, a lecturer at our faculty, contributed to the creation of the digital models.

György Bernády (1864–1938) was a central figure in the modern development of Târgu Mureş. An iron-willed mayor, he oversaw the construction of the city's most emblematic buildings, including the old town hall, the Palace of Culture, and the most prestigious schools. He was also responsible for creating the infrastructure of a modern European city: during his tenure, the water supply network, sewerage system, and asphalt paving were completed, among other things.

But who was György Bernády really? What factors contributed to his spectacular achievements? The exhibition of the Historical Department of the Mureș County Museum seeks answers to these questions, while presenting his circle of acquaintances and connections, and highlighting that his work was not only significant at the local level. The exhibition presents the politician active in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, his relationship with the architects and artists who created the city's significant buildings, his trip to America, his Masonic activities, his national political work between the two world wars, but also certain aspects of his private life.

Based on the latest research findings of the past decade, the exhibition, which has been in preparation for over a year, features models of several buildings designed by Bernády but never realized, as well as numerous personal items that have remained hidden from the public until now.

The exhibition was made possible by the Hungarian Genius Program of the National Cultural Fund and the support of the Mureș County Council. The exhibition's key partner institutions are: the Mureș County Office of the Romanian National Archives, the Ybl Miklós Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering at Obuda University, the Hungarian Museum of Architecture and Monument Protection Documentation Center, and the Association of Hungarian Rural Museums.

The exhibition entitled György Bernády. Social Networks will be open from July 12, 2024, Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Palace of Culture. Closed on Mondays.
